Introduction

ICD-10-CM stands for the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification. It is a standardized classification of disease, injuries, and causes of death, by etiology (disease cause) and anatomic location. The use of standardized code improves consistency among physicians in recording patient symptoms and diagnoses. The ICD contains a list of alphanumeric codes which correspond to diagnoses and procedures recorded in conjunction with hospital care in the United States and internationally.
